Course Work
PROPOSED WORK FOR MID JANUARY TO MID FEBRUARY 2012
Greens - The greens will be top - dressed with kings washed dune sand on week beginning 16th of January. They will be
top dressed again with kings washed dune sand on week beginning the 30th of January. The greens will be verti-drained with 12 mm diameter tines to help dry them out and firm them up.
Tees - Verti-drain, slit tine and divot fill the tees.
Surrounds - Verti-drain the surrounds.
Fairways - Divot fill and verti-drain the fairways.
Drainage Project - Turf the drainage trench lines and repair the damage done to the areas at the 9th and 11th fairways,
which was caused during the drainage installation work. A gap will be left while turfing the drainage trenches to allow for quicker drainage pull at the drain lines, these areas will be seeded in the spring. A lift and drop rule will have to be put in place until the grass establishes in these areas. Verti-drain the areas around the drainage work which is compacted due to the heavy machinery which worked on the drainage project and due to the volume of material which was dug out from the drain lines and had to be transported of site as well as the volume of gravel and rootzone which had to be transported back on site to fill up the drains. Patience will be required to allow the compacted areas to dry out.
11th Fairway - Build up with soil, shape and turf the area on the left hand side of the fairway where the new main drain line starts. This area had to be raised up to allow us to create a run from this area to the 7th burn.
General - Work on general maintenance such as edging bunkers, aeration and divoting tees and fairways to get the course ready for the start of the season.
Greens Maintenance
Will members and visitors please note that the following work will be carried out over a 3 to 4 week period from Monday 7th November 2011. This work is of course weather dependant.
The work will involve installing drainage to three problem areas on the course.
1 – 11th tees – improve area immediately in front of tees. As the numbers of rounds increase so does compaction between the rough and the Island Bunker this will not be remedied by aeration alone but with a combination of that and 80mm laterals tying in to the existing drain.
2 – 11th fairway – from approximately ½ way along the fairway across the approach and round in front of the green to the right connecting with 9th fairway. Install a larger drainage line taking water across fairway to existing drain in front of 10th tees.
3 – 9th fairway – from level with the grassy bunker along to the 11th green. Install a larger drainage line taking water across fairway to the 7th burn.
The majority of work being carried out above shall be by open trenching which is both time consuming and labour intensive. While this work is going on there will be a need to close off certain holes, this is to ensure those working do so in a safe environment. Areas to be diverted/closed will be advised on the club notice board and through the Proshop, please note there is no intention to be working weekends so there should be all 18 holes open however this may change depending on how the contract is progressing
After the primary drainage works have been completed secondary drainage in the form of sand banding will be installed, this will increase the speed that surface water gets to the main drains. There should be no need for golfers diversions while this work is being carried out. After all works are completed there will be an element of scarring which will take time to ‘grow-in’, the longer we leave to start the works the longer it takes for the scars to heal thus the timing of excavation is crucial.
The areas in question have become increasingly problematic with more and more puddles appearing each season and staying for longer periods than is acceptable. This work will improve the playability on these holes as well as allowing our Greenstaff to have continued access to all areas for maintenance purposes.
The contract has been awarded to Greentech Sportsturf Limited from Stirling who has more than 30 years experience within the industry. They have notably recently completed an extensive fairway drainage project at The Carrick course on the banks of Loch Lomond.
Please note it is our intention to top dress the greens with washed dune sand regularly between 17th October and mid April 2012. We aim to get approx. 120 tonnes of sand onto the greens during this period. This is the same programme as last year. Our aim is to try to produce firmer, drier greens.
Council hope that all players will do all they can to protect the playing surfaces over the winter period.
Course Maintenance :: Proposed Autumn/Winter Program
Greens - Apply moss killer (4.0.4. + 9 iron) to the greens to control moss which has established itself on the greens due to the wet summer conditions, this work will be done week commencing the 19th of September. Seed the greens with the blec seeder, use a seed mixture containing 50% chewings fescue / 50% slender creeping red fescue. Verti- cut the greens prior to the seeding work and top dress the greens with kings washed dune sand after the seeding has been done, this work will be done week commencing 26th of September. We aim to do six greens per day as it is important that we do not rush this job as we need to get as much of the fescue seed as possible into the blec seed holes. The greens will be top dressed with kings washed dune sand on a regular basis over the autumn, winter and spring period as we aim to get approximately 120 tones of sand onto the greens before early May 2012, this work will commence week beginning 17th of October, Before each top dressing the greens will be either sarrel rolled or solid tined as this will help us to get the sand into the rootzone. The reason for doing this work is to help produce firmer drier greens. Aeration work on the greens will be limited to monthly slit tining until the end of December 2011 and the afore mentioned solid tine work. Solid tine the 7th and 10th greens with 25mm diameter tines to a depth of approximately 250mm and fill the tine holes with kings washed dune kiln dried sand this work has already been done to the 3rd, 8th, 11th, 12th and 13th greens and has produced good results considering the wet summers we have had. The greens will be sprayed with insecticide to control leatherjackets, they will also be sprayed with a fungicide to prevent fusarium patch disease as there is a possibility of this happening due to top dressing the greens over the autumn and winter period.
Tees - Slit and solid tine the tees. Divot fill the tees, top dress the tees with kings washed dune sand. Treat the tees with mosskiller. Spray the tees with insecticide to control leatherjackets and carbendazim to control wormcasts. Try and protect the main tees wherever possible, as we tend to come out of the winter with the tees in very poor condition with us using the main tees throughout the winter months.
Surrounds - Slit tine and solid tine the surrounds. Divot fill and top dress the surrounds. Treat the surrounds with mosskiller. Spray the surrounds with insecticide to control leatherjackets and carbendazim to control wormcasts.
Fairways - Divot fill the fairways. Verti-drain the fairways, start the verti-draining work week beginning 17th of October introduce preferred lies at this time. Spray the fairways with sulphate of iron to control moss, insecticide to control leatherjackets and carbendazim to control worm casts. Introduce a lift and drop policy to protest vulnerable fairway areas, the best way to do this is to mark out the area to be protected with white marker paint. Introduce compulsory use of fairway mats from Monday 2nd January 2012.
Bunkers - Revett any existing bunkers, which are in need of repair, the bunkers most in need of being revetted were selected on the council course walk. We will need a supply of suitable turf to revett the bunkers; the only suitable place to take turf from on the course would be 2nd quarry, 9th carry and 13th carry. If we take turf from these areas we must reinstate the turf quickly. The best way to do this would be as soon as we lift 120 m2 of turf we must reinstate that area before we lift any more turf, we would expect to use around 840m2 in total.
3rd Green/4th Tee Traffic Route - Create a mat path leading to the 4th tees. There is an area that can be used which would not come directly into play it is behind a line of gorse bushes. The ground would be shaped to allow for turf to be layed, the mats would be layed on the turf which would mean the grass would come through the mats and if need be golfers could play from the path area.
Paths - Extend the mat path from the bridge on the left hand side of the hole as it crosses the burn to link up with the path at the rear of the 5th tee. Link up the mat path at the 7th hole at the entry point in front of the 7th ladies tee. Link up the mat paths around the 12th tees. And finish the mat path through the dunes at the 14th.
Gorse - Tidy up and cut back leggy gorse around the course we have been given advice from the Scottish Golf Environmental Group on how best to tackle this work and with council approval we feel we should follow their advice.
Woodland - Continue to thin out the woodland at the 9th, 12th and 13th woodland. We have been given advice from Scottish Golf Environmental Group on how to develop these areas of the course and with council approval we feel we should follow their advice.
Turfing - Turf worn areas around the course starting with the area at the 8th hole tractor bridge.
5th Burn - Remove the rotten sleepers which support the burn banks in front of the 6th green, use environmentally treated sleepers as a base and revett on top of the sleepers with turf to create a natural looking bank.
Fences - Repair any damaged fences around the course. Get a quote from contactors to replace the wooden fence alongside 13th tee to 12th green area.
Viewing Towers - Paint the viewing towers.
Shelters - Check the shelters on the course and treat with wood preservative.
Rough - Verti-drain and scarify the rough to create wispy rough.
11th Hole - Grade the mound through the green at the 11th so it can be mown at a
manageable height and shape the ground behind the mound to create graded rough. Construct the triple bunker set up at the front right of the 11th green and reconstruct the greenside bunker on the left hand side (which was passed at the SGM).
Drainage Project – see separate notice
Coastal Erosion - Keep an eye on the area of dune land, which runs from the 1st tee to the 1st green and report on any further damage.
Greens Maintenance
Will members please note that the following work will be carried out during the period Monday 26th to Wednesday 28th September 2011. This work is of course weather dependant.
All greens will be verti-cut then seeded with fescue seed mixture and top dressed with kings washed dune sand.
Please note it is our intention to top dress the greens with washed dune sand regularly between 17th October and mid April 2012. We aim to get approx. 120 tonnes of sand onto the greens during this period. This is the same programme as last year. Our aim is to try to produce firmer, drier greens.
