100th Anniversary of the Present Course - Nov 2009
The original course was a shared links starting at Leven, playing towards Lundin and back again, with the Lundin end described in 1868 as “benty, tussocky and ripe with whin”. Some of the whin remains today.
Players started at both ends of the links but with 1400 players, congestion became a major problem and in 1907 it was decided to create two independent links courses, Lundin and Leven.
In March 1908 James Braid, originally from Earslferry, and, who as a five times winner of the ‘Open’ Championship and a founder and later President of the PGA had built up an unrivalled reputation as a course designer, came to Lundin Links and in the autumn work began on laying out the new course. It largely remains unaltered to this day.
The new 18 hole Lundin course was completed in 1909 at a cost of £143.2.6 and opened for play in November of that year.
James Braid, in his tweed cap, Norfolk jacket and ever present collar and tie symbolised the ethos of golf in its ability to bring together people from all walks of life in friendship and competition – that spirit is very much epitomised by the welcome given to visitors to Lundin Golf Club.
